Kanye West’s Yeezy partnership with Adidas ‘under review’
The Gold Digger rapper is facing immense criticism after he wore a White Lives Matter shirt at his Yeezy SZN9 fashion show in Paris on Monday.
Despite being called out by fans and celebrities, Kanye, 45, has doubled down on his stance and even branded Black Lives Matter a ‘scam’.
In light of the controversy, Adidas has released a statement confirming they have been in discussions with Kanye in recent days, and that they are now reviewing whether to continue the partnership which sees the sports wear brand host Yeezy under its umbrella.
‘Adidas has always been about creativity, innovation and supporting athletes and artists to achieve their vision,’ the statement, obtained by CNBC reporter Sara Eisen, began.
‘The adidas Yeezy partnership is one of the most successful collaborations in our industry’s history. We are proud of our team that has worked tirelessly throughout our collaboration with Ye and the iconic products that were born from it. We also recognise that all successful partnerships are rooted in mutual respect and shared values.’
It continued: ‘After repeated efforts to resolve the situation, we have taken the decision to place the partnership under review.
‘We will continue to co-manage the current product during this period.’
Kanye, who now goes by Ye, has been critical of Adidas in recent months, including publicly claiming the brand did not have his approval for this year’s Yeezy Day.
In an Instagram post, he said at the time: ‘Picked colors and named them without my approval and hired people that worked for me without my approval stole my colorways without my approval stole my styles and material approaches without my approval took talent on the production side and sprinkled them through Adidas Originals without my approval.’
Last month, he also announced his intention to part ways with the brand at the end of their contract, stating: ‘It’s time for me to go it alone.’
Kanye has faced scrutiny this week after he appeared at the presentation for his latest Yeezy collection wearing a jumper with ‘White Lives Matter’ printed on the back.
Political pundit Candace Owens and several Yeezy models also wore tops bearing the slogan.
