Justin Bieber: Our World REVIEW: An overly-scripted rockumentary
And those Beliebers (as I believe they still call themselves) won’t be disappointed by this Amazon documentary, which blends his slickly shot performance with supposedly candid backstage footage. But this Bieber agnostic was nostalgic for the brilliance of After The Screaming Stops. Our World feels like it comes from a different galaxy to that wonderfully weird Bros reunion documentary.
While the Goss brothers were hilariously unguarded, Bieber’s words always feel like they have been scripted by his PR department, even when he’s wielding a selfie stick in his own bedroom.
In between songs, director Michael D Ratner keeps cutting back to the preparations for the big night. As the star chats uneasily with his wife Hailey, stagehands, band members, dancers, and security guards weigh in with verdicts on the 27-year-old’s genius, leadership skills, and loyalty to friends and family.
Their testaments are so suspiciously similar, these sections take on the air of the Al Qaeda hostage video.
Justin comes across as earnest, serious, and god-fearing. He seems to have grown up a fair bit since his monkey-owning, paparazzi-fighting days. Good for him – but bad news for the rockumentary maker.
