Justice League: Green Arrow Reveals How He’d Spend His Final Moments

Justice League leader Green Arrow just showed his longtime love interest and fellow member Black Canary how he’d spend his final moments.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Justice League #64, by Brian Michael Bendis, Steve Pugh, Nick Filardi and Josh Reed.

Green Arrow has always been a romantic, but in the aftermath of a near-death experience during Justice League’s most recent mission, he felt that he needed to spend more time with Black Canary. The two have a long history, and over the years, Oliver Queen has broken her heart more than once–both in and out of costume.

Taking a hit to the head helped him gain a new perspective on life, and in that moment, his thoughts turned to his love for her. He took her on a date to enjoy a picnic dinner along the shore to watch the sunset. He told her how he felt and kissed her as dusk blossomed golden red behind the waves, even as a sniper watched them through a rifle scope.

Unfortunately, very little of the date was depicted beyond the kiss. However, the aftermath of the date was seen as the couple pulled their car up to Oliver Queen’s house. From their demeanor, it’s quite clear that the date was a complete success. Black Canary said she had really needed that, stretching appreciatively as she exited the vehicle. Oliver leaned in to kiss her again, then told her that a sniper was watching them. In fact, he had been aware of the sniper’s presence the entire time. In other words, he had given her a perfect romantic evening without ever letting her know that they might be under deadly attack at any moment.

In many ways, this is incredibly sweet. Neither of them could hope to outrun or survive a sniper’s attack. Green Arrow meant it when he told Black Canary that he wanted to show her his love. Not only was he determined to give her a romantic evening and tell her how he felt, but he decided that if they were going to die, then he would do all he could to make sure she was happy up until the end. The psychological pressure of such an endeavor must have been incredible, yet he never let her guess at the truth.

By the time he finally drove back home, he had figured out that the sniper did not mean to kill them–proven by the fact that the assailant had several opportunities to take the shot. However, by driving back home, Oliver Queen was able to get closer to the unseen gunman–close enough for a boxing glove arrow to knock him from his perch. The superhero power couple worked together to take down the man, who revealed himself to be someone known as the Daemon Rose. The details of this mysterious sniper’s identity are still yet to be revealed, but what is clear now is that Oliver Queen would quite literally die trying to make Black Canary happy.
