‘Just retire’: Rookie makes Big Bash history

Cricket fans were lost for words when a Sydney Thunder rookie made BBL history with an insane bowling performance on debut.

Sydney Thunder rookie Mohammad Hasnain has made Big Bash history with an insane triple wicket maiden over on his BBL debut.

The Pakistani import set the Sydney Showgrounds alight with a blistering opening over for the Thunder against the Adelaide Strikers on Sunday night.

Hasnain picked up three wickets, at one stage was on a hat-trick and conceded no runs when he was brought in to the attack in the third over.

Strikers opener Jake Weatherald clipped a ball straight down the throat of Daniel Sams at deep square leg to give Hasnain his first BBL wicket.

With Hasnain’s deliveries nudging 150km/h, he trapped Matt Short lbw for 13 the very next ball, outdoing him with sheer pace.

A couple of balls later, Jono Wells struck a ball to Ben Cutting at mid-wicket and Hasnain suddenly had figures of 3/0.

The 21-year-old created Big Bash history, becoming the first ever player to take three wickets in their debut BBL over. Only three other players had taken two wickets in their first over in the BBL.

Commentators were lost for words as Hasnain tore through the Strikers’ top order.

Ex-Australian fast bowler Brett Lee was blown away by the Pakistani import and jokingly urged him to retire because his career had already peaked.

“I’m going to take a stab in the dark and say this has been the best debut first over ever in BBL history,” Lee said on Fox Cricket.

“This is phenomenal to watch. The youngster on debut three for none on debut.

“Just retire. Just grab your hat and walk off and say I’m done. Can’t better that.”

“This has got to be one of the best debuts of all time, surely,” former England international and Fox Cricket commentator Isa Guha said.

“There cannot be a better debut. One over, three wickets, no runs.

“This is extraordinary stuff. Hasnain making his BBL debut. He came in Christmas night. He has been away from his team because they have been in a Covid bubble.

“Oh my word. Mohammad Hasnain has launched himself into the BBL in some style.”

Cricket fans were in a state of shock at Hasnain exploits with the ball on debut.

Sports writer Alex Fair tweeted: “One of the great BBL debuts from Hasnain. What a special over that was.”

Former NSW paceman Trent Copeland said: “Gee whiz. Hasnain 3/0 bowling absolute rockets.”

Fox Sports writer Ben Waterworth added: “My word, Mohammad Hasnain — remember the name! Bowling some serious heat. 3-0 from five balls.”

ABC sports broadcaster Quentin Hull said: “Scott Boland areas here from Mohammed Hasnain”.

Hasnain finished with figures of 3/20 off his four overs as the Thunder bowled out the Strikers for 144 to secure its fifth win of BBL|11 and move up to third on the ladder.

With fellow import Saqib Mahmood being recalled to England ahead of a white ball tour of the West Indies, it appears the Thunder have a more than worthy fast bowling replacement in Hasnain.

Batting first, the men in lime green posted 7/172, largely on the back of a superb knock by opener Matthew Gilkes, who struck 93 off 57 balls.
