Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has suggested he would accept being sacked if his team’s current form bleeds into next season. The Reds’ prospects of a top-four finish decreased further on Tuesday night as they were fortunate to escape defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where they drew 0-0.
Liverpool and Chelsea played out a fourth successive 0-0 draw which was a result that didn’t help either side, both of whom are currently slumped in mid-table. The Reds will go without a trophy this season and run the risk of missing out on next season’s Champions League.
Klopp’s side slip to eighth in the Premier League with the stalemate, and they will be 10 points off the top four if Newcastle United and Manchester United win on Wednesday. And the German coach has admitted that he wouldn’t be in charge at Anfield if he suffered the same disastrous season again.
“No [I haven’t had a season like this], thank God,” Klopp told BBC Sport. “I wouldn’t be manager of Liverpool if I had a couple of these seasons. We have to get through it. That’s how life is. You have to fight to change your fortunes.”
Klopp also admitted that Liverpool arrived at Stamford Bridge low on confidence after Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City. But he was pleased with the visitors’ fight and considered the result a step forward rather than another step back.
He explained: “Both teams played last year in two finals, two of the best 0-0s I ever saw. Today, it was two teams low on confidence but really fighting.
“We’re fine with a point, a lot of good stuff. We showed a lot of fight. We have to keep going. We struggled with the last line in the beginning but changed three times.
“The balls in behind were tricky, but then we recovered well. We got better into the game. The midfield was well-connected. We had our opportunities up front.
“It was not spectacular. It was a step. That’s what we have to do – make steps. Sometimes smaller steps. We need to have these chances. You need to keep having chances.
“I’m not disappointed about that. They scored twice, but both goals were disallowed. I didn’t expect a team with six changes to play the best game of the season.
“The boys who came in used their opportunity and showed they were ready. We cannot talk about the goals we have if we don’t get points.
“We don’t give up. We will fight. We can talk a lot, but we have to show. We saw a step in the right direction tonight.” Liverpool host league leaders Arsenal at Anfield this Sunday in their next match.
