Jose Mourinho charged by UEFA as Sevilla also punished after Europa carnage

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings over an incredible 10 separate charges after a chaotic final, which Sevilla won on penalties. Mourinho has been charged with insulting/abusive language towards a match official.

The Portuguese former Chelsea and Manchester United boss was filmed patrolling the car park after the game, waiting for referee Anthony Taylor. Mourinho was heard calling the team of English officials “f*****g crooks”.

Roma could also face sanctions over five charges. They include the throwing of objects, lighting of fireworks, acts of damage, crowd disturbance, and the improper conduct of their players.

Winners Sevilla face four charges. UEFA has charged the La Liga side with an invasion of the field of play, throwing of objects, lighting of fireworks, and the improper conduct of their team.

English official Taylor showed 14 yellow cards during a tense clash at the Puskas Arena in Budapest. Roma led through Paulo Dybala’s goal but they were pegged back following Gianluca Mancini’s own goal. Sevilla ultimately won on penalties, with Gonzalo Montiel repeating his World Cup heroics to convert the crucial spot-kick.

However, the match has since been overshadowed by the abuse of Taylor inside Budapest airport. In ugly scenes, the 44-year-old, alongside his wife and young children, were videoed being hounded by Roma fans as they moved to board their flight home.

Hundreds of supporters can be seen screaming abuse at Taylor, with some attempting to pursue the Premier League official. Taylor has been supported by the FA, Premier League and the PGMOL following the incident.

A PGMOL statement, which has since been shared by the FA, read: “PGMOL is aware of videos circulating on social media showing Anthony Taylor and his family being harassed and abused at Budapest Airport. We are appalled at the unjustified and abhorrent abuse directed at Anthony and his family as he tries to make his way home from refereeing the UEFA Europa League final.
