Jones quits, ending train wreck Wallabies tenure

Eddie Jones has resigned as coach of the Wallabies less than one month after Australia’s disastrous campaign at the World Cup ended in the group stages.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports Jones has struck a deal to walk away from the role.

Sources with knowledge of the situation, who requested anonymity, told the Herald that Jones and Rugby Australia had reached an agreement but the final paperwork is yet to be signed.

Last month, the Herald broke the bombshell news that Jones was secretly interviewed by Japanese rugby officials to take over as the country’s head coach next year, just days before Australia’s first match at the World Cup in France.

Jones denied he had spoken with the Japan Rugby Football Union and repeatedly voiced his commitment to RA.

The Herald reported on Friday that Jones informed RA he was open to walking away from the Wallabies job, ending his $5 million deal less than one year into his five-year contract.

Jones spoke to The Herald and said his decision will “hopefully be the catalyst for change”.

“Sometimes you have to eat shit for others to eat caviar further down the track,” he said.

The 63-year-old was sacked by England Rugby in December after winning five of 12 Tests last year.

He then replaced Dave Rennie with the Wallabies in January and held a 2-9 record at the helm.

Jones was contracted with RA until the home World Cup in 2027.

He first became coach of the Wallabies in 2001 and enjoyed a successful four years with the team in which Australia won the 2001 Tri Nations, reached the final of the 2003 World Cup on home soil and last held the Bledisloe Cup in 2002.

Wide World of Sports has contacted RA for comment.
