Joker Artist Guillem March Launches Slice-of-Life Love Comic
LAURA, Guillem March’s last creator-owned work before he began drawing superheroes for DC, is finally getting an English print release.
LAURA, a slice-of-life comic by The Joker artist Guillem March, will launch in November courtesy of ABLAZE Publishing.
Originally serialized in a newspaper and compiled by Spanish publishing company Dolmen in 2006, LAURA was Guillem March’s last creator-owned project before the Spanish artist became internationally known for his work on DC books, including Gotham City Sirens, Talon, Batman and, most recently, The Joker. March has since published his non-superhero book Karmen in English via Image Comics, but a printed English version of LAURA has remained unavailable until now.
Starring a 20-year-old woman named Laura, March’s story delves into the pain of recovering from unrequited love and moving on in life. “Guillem March tackles heartbreak and young love in a poignant and realistic way in LAURA,” Rich Young, co-founder of ABLAZE Publishing, said. “And his artwork on this book is excellent throughout. Guillem fans are certain to enjoy!”
March successfully used Kickstarter to crowdfund a digital English version of LAURA in 2016, calling the book an early passion project that he had written, penciled, inked, colored and lettered himself.
“I was lucky enough that a local newspaper was interested in my work and I could serialize LAURA, doing one page every week,” March wrote on Kickstarter at the time. “That was circa 2003-04. Soon after the story was collected in a beautiful hardcover book by Spanish publisher Dolmen. Print runs in Spain are extremely low and the return I got never made up for all the work behind these pages. But hey, making comics is my passion.”
LAURA releases Nov. 3, 2021 for $3.99 and features two covers — one by March and a variant by Gerald Parel.
