Johnny Depp ‘proud’ of daughter’s role in ‘scandalous’ drama The Idol
Johnny Depp reportedly shared a positive reaction to his daughter Lily Rose for her starring role in The Idol, despite the mounting criticism.
The boundary pushing drama follows self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult, Tedros (The Weeknd), who enters a complicated relationship with rising pop idol Jocelyn (Lily-Rose).
However, before the programme even premiered, it was embroiled in controversy after Rolling Stone claimed the project was in ‘turmoil’ following multiple script changes and the exit of director Amy Seimetz.
The first two episodes were panned by critics, with some labelling it ‘torture porn’.
Despite the backlash, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor, 59, claimed his daughter ‘must be doing something right’ to be getting so much attention.
A source shared: ‘Johnny loves that Lily is carving out a career of her own and challenging herself to take on roles that interest her and test her.’
The insider added to Mail Online: ‘He believes that she must be doing something right since the role is getting so much attention, and he is proud of her success.’
The Rolling Stone previously claimed that Euphoria director Sam Levinson ‘dialed up the disturbing sexual content and nudity’ upon his arrival.
However, The Weeknd – real name Abel Tesfaye – fiercely clapped back at the criticism.
He was initially called out for his ‘inappropriate’ response – after he shared a clip from the series branding the publication ‘irrelevant’ after the report emerged.
After fans tuned into the first episode titled Pop Tarts & Rat Tales, several were stunned to see Lily’s character Jocelyn naked within the first five minutes.
While some weren’t here for the sexually charged scenes, others were impressed by the deep storyline behind it.
‘I don’t know why people giving the idol such a bad rap, it’s telling a very real story of the behind the scenes in the industry. How many artists we saw crumble under the bright lights and glitter? most famously:Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Bynes, Miley, Mariah Carey,’ one person wrote.
‘Didn’t dislike #THEIDOL. Not the most riveting but LDR and Sennott’s performances kept me hooked. Also what I suspected is true – a lot of the bad press is just weird. This is not even HBO’s top three explicit shows,’ another added.
Metro.co.uk have reached out to Johnny Depp’s reps for comment.
The first episode of The Idol is available to stream on NOW and Sky Atlantic.
