John Whaite apologises to fans as he addresses why he won’t be smiling on Strictly

Chef John Whaite will make history tonight as part of Strictly Come Dancing’s first all-male competing couple with Johannes Radebe, 34. The dancing duo will be performing a Tango to New Order’s Blue Monday on the first live show.

Due to the nature of the dance, John, 32, revealed he has created an alter ego named Dante, to keep him in character.

Speaking from his bed this morning, he began by telling his Instagram followers he was feeling fresh after an 11-hour sleep.

“I’m so excited for today,” he spilled. “I’m nervous as hell.”

“I think we all are, but at the end of the day, we have all, that’s Johannes and me, and all the other couples, have worked our butts off for today.

“All we can do now is go out there and smile.”

In a swift U-turn of his words, the Great British Bake Off winner said he won’t be smiling as it doesn’t go with the dance style.

“I can’t smile actually because I’m Dante, the tango master,” he said, changing his voice to a deep tone.

“It’s why I’m growing the hair back on my chest,” he added, showing his followers.

He explained: “He was being too nice. I said, ‘Johannes, I’m just not getting it so please can you talk me through the steps, be horrible to me and I’ll get it’.

“He was like, ‘No darling, I don’t do that’. I started crying.”

Addressing the lengthy hours in rehearsals, he continued: “Sometimes the days are stressful and we have to take a few more breaks.

“Last week when we were learning the steps, I was getting really stressed… I glaze over.

“I reach mental saturation and he has to either feed me Haribo or send me home and I think it’s easier just to put me in cab and send me home.”
