John Terry throws hat into the ring for Chelsea job despite ‘retiring’
Chelsea legend John Terry would only come out of managerial ‘retirement’ if his former club came calling. The former centre-back has revealed he has all but ended his dream of becoming a first-team boss.
Terry left Chelsea in 2017 to join Aston Villa. He became an assistant at Villa Park the year after and remained in the job until the summer of 2021.
He applied for several managerial jobs after retiring but was unsuccessful. The 42-year-old is now back at Chelsea as coaching consultant with the club’s academy players.
He no longer has the intention of making a distinct effort to get into management. But he admits he would be unable to reject the chance to manage Chelsea or just be a part of the first-team setup at Stamford Bridge.
Terry told Stephen Hendry’s Cue Tips: “Yeah I’m done from a managerial point of view. The only job I’d come out of my kind of retirement for would be the Chelsea job.
“To be involved in some capacity with a first-team role… I love my role at the minute, working with the younger players [at Chelsea].
“I’ve been through that process as a kid myself [and] I’m passing on my knowledge to them, having loads of conversations with them. I always see myself as a coach in the long-term but there were better coaches than me at Villa, Craig Shakespeare and Richard O’Kelly.
“I went for a couple of managers’ jobs when I left and didn’t get them, got a bit deflated so I came away and I’ve spent a bit more family time. I enjoy my golf as well, I want to play a bit of golf and have family time.
“The reason I left Villa, which I’ve not really said anywhere, was a family reason. Coming back home and being with my family.”
Chelsea are currently on the search for a new head coach. Graham Potter was sacked on Sunday after less than seven months in charge.
Bruno Saltor has been placed in temporary charge and will lead the team against Liverpool on Tuesday. The Spaniard knows the challenge he faces in his first step into management.
He said: “Obviously it is a massive challenge. I have been coaching for just four years but I have been 20 years involved in football.
“I start really early and I have a lot of experience in the changing room. What I will try to do is help the players, guide the players because I have been in those situations before.”
