Johanna Konta pulls out of Tokyo Olympics after positive coronavirus test

Johanna Konta has pulled out of competing at the Olympic Games in Tokyo due to the effects of coronavirus. Konta missed Wimbledon after one of her team contracted COVID-19 and the British number one has now revealed that she has tested positive for the virus.

The 30-year-old only withdrew from Wimbledon the day before the start of the Grand Slam after being forced to self-isolate for 10 days.

Konta, who was seeded 27th for the Major, was scheduled to compete for Team GB in the women’s singles and women’s doubles alongside Heather Watson.

But having sat out of Wimbledon and been unable to train, she has made the decision to pull out of the Tokyo Olympics, which run from July 24 to August 8 in Japan.

The news comes as a further blow for Konta, who has endured a difficult year, having only been able to play 15 matches this year because of injury and coronavirus.

Roger Federer has also withdrawn from the Olympics after aggravating a knee injury during his run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

“During this time, I’ll also be glued to my TV cheering on my fellow Team GB athletes and hope you will all join me.”

Konta’s withdrawal means Watson will no longer be able to compete in the women’s doubles as no other British players are ranked highly enough to qualify as a replacement.

The British number two will be limited to singles unless she and Joe Salisbury make the cut for the mixed doubles.

Dan Evans, Andy Murray and the Wimbledon mixed doubles champion Neal Skupski are still set to compete for Team GB at the Games.

The Olympics will take place in front of no supporters after Japan declared a state of emergency following a spike in coronavirus cases in the country.
