Jodie Whittaker was ‘grief-ridden’ filming final Doctor Who scenes
Jodie confirmed she would be leaving the long-running BBC series earlier this year alongside show runner Chris Chibnall, after the pair joined the show at the same time in 2017.
Announcing the news over the summer, Chris said: ‘Jodie and I made a “three series and out” pact with each other at the start of this once-in-a-lifetime blast.
‘So now our shift is done, and we’re handing back the Tardis keys.’
Ahead of Jodie’s final episodes airing, the actress opened up on her time in the Tardis coming to a close.
She said she became ‘grief-ridden’ through filming her last scenes ahead of the Doctor’s regeneration on the show.
’I’ve shot my version of regen, and it was singularly the most emotional day on set I think I’ve ever had,’ she told Entertainment Weekly.
‘It’s a really bizarre feeling, because it’s the best time I’ve ever had on a job, and I made the decision to leave it, so it’s a really strange thing to do to yourself. It feels like you’re giving yourself stitches — like, “Why have you done it?” But… it felt right.’
She continued: ‘It was a wonderfully-celebratory-slash-grief-ridden day that I could spend with the family that I’d made.
‘I suppose the best thing about it is that the episodes are still on. So until they’re off, I don’t have to really get my head around the fact that it’s not my part!’
It’s not yet known who will be taking over from Jodie, with returning show runner Russell T. Davies telling The Guardian that he is ‘just starting auditions’ ahead of his tenure.
The latest episode of the sci-fi epic saw the relationship between Jodie’s the Doctor and her companion Yaz (Mandip Gill) finally adressed.
In the Eve of the Daleks, the Doctor, Yaz and fellow time traveller Dan (John Bishop) joined by humans Sarah (Aisling Bea) and Nick (Adjani Salmon) who got into quite the sticky situation.
The gang all found themselves stuck in a time loop, with the looming threat of an Executioner Dalek.
Later on, the Doctor and Yaz were urged to admit their feelings to one another by newcomer Dan, much to the delight of many of those watching.
Many viewers praised the ongoing storyline after the episode aired, as well as by LGBT+ charity Stonewall, who said the plot will ‘mean so much to LGBTQ+ people across the country.’
However, fans will have to wait until the spring to see whether their relationship develops past the point of being platonic.
Doctor Who: Legend of the Sea Devils will air on BBC One this spring.
