Jockey fractures vertebrae in another horror fall

Victorian racing has been rocked by another serious injury to a jockey after a horrific fall at a major meeting.

Rising star Teo Nugent was rushed to hospital in a semi-conscious state after his ride Florescent Star clipped heels with another runner and fell during the Listed Abell Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Scans at Royal Melbourne Hospital later revealed Nugent had fractured his C1 vertebrae.

As of Sunday morning, Racing Victoria had not provided a further update on the jockey.

The horse, Florescent Star, was euthanised at the track following the accident.

Wide World of Sports has chosen to not publish any vision of the race or the fall.

Nugent, 24, is a Group 1 winner who has collected more than $16 million in prizemoney for connections so far in his career.

It was the third serious fall at a major Melbourne race meeting in as many weeks, and Nugent is the fourth leading jockey to be seriously injured.

A fortnight ago fellow rising star Ethan Brown had multiple surgeries after suffering internal injuries when he fell aboard Maximillius in the $1 million Group 1 feature race Australian Guineas.

And last week, Jamie Kah and Craig Williams were hospitalised when they both fell during the Sires Produce Stakes at Flemington.

Kah suffered head injuries and was sedated in hospital, but woke during the week and was speaking. Williams underwent surgery on a fractured clavicle.
