Jets GM Joe Douglas gives update on Marcus Maye situation

The Jets didn’t deal Marcus Maye at Tuesday’s trade deadline, and now the wait will continue to see if they are able to lock up the franchise-tagged safety in the offseason.

With about $6 million remaining on Maye’s $10.6 million contract for this season, general manager Joe Douglas was noncommittal about an extension after he was unable to find a suitable landing spot for the pending free agent.

“I’m not going to get into any conversations. Marcus is a valued member of this team, I will say that,” Douglas said. “We love having him here and he’s a fantastic young player. As you guys know, he’s under a franchise tag, so we can’t renegotiate or do a deal with him until the end of the season. We’ve got [10] games left to evaluate him and every other member of this team.”

Asked if he’d like to keep the five-year veteran on the roster beyond this year, Douglas reiterated that “Marcus is a valued member of the team, but there’s a lot of meat left on the bone in terms of the season. We’ll see how the last 10 games play out and go from there at the end of the year.”

The 28-year-old Maye still faces charges in Broward County, Fla., over a February arrest for DUI, a charge that wasn’t made public until recent weeks.

“I would say without getting into specifics that Marcus was the first guy in my office when the news of that broke and we had a great conversation,” Douglas said. “While you don’t condone the action, you support the man.

“We know that Marcus is a fantastic young man and support him as a person. Obviously it was a mistake and we had a great conversation and I support Marcus. … Anything that happens from here on out will come strictly from the league.”

Wide receivers Jamison Crowder and Denzel Mims also were not traded, although Douglas did acquire offensive guard and medical doctor Laurent Duvernay-Tardif from the Chiefs in exchange for tight end Dan Brown. Last week, the Jets also reacquired veteran quarterback Joe Flacco from the Eagles.

Duvernay-Tardif, who graduated from McGill University in Canada, worked in the medical field in a long-term care facility outside Montreal last year after opting out of the 2020 NFL season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Duvernay-Tardif suffered a hand injury in the preseason and was inactive for Kansas City’s first seven games.

The 30-year-old lineman was active Monday night against the Giants for the first time since the Chiefs’ win over the 49ers in the Super Bowl in February 2020. He appeared in 60 games with 57 starts for the Chiefs from 2015-19 and could push right guard Greg Van Roten for playing time.

“Like with [Flacco], it’s an opportunity to add a Super Bowl champion to the room,” Douglas said. “You guys know how I feel about the offensive and defensive line, if there’s an opportunity — and obviously at quarterback — to improve those rooms, we’re going to do it.

“LDT brings that championship pedigree, high-character person and obviously is a very smart guy. I can’t wait to get him here and see him compete.”
