Jet2 cancels all flights to Rhodes

Jet2 has cancelled all its flights from the UK to Rhodes as wildfires continue to rage on the Greek island.

A spokesperson for the airline said: “Due to the wildfires affecting Rhodes and the impact across the island, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all flights going from the UK to Rhodes today.

“As a result of this, we will be cancelling all bookings and processing full refunds. Flights from Rhodes to the UK will continue to operate as normal.”

Thousands of people have been evacuated from homes and hotels on Rhodes in fires which could “worsen”.

A spokesperson for the Hellenic Fire Corps described the fires as the most difficult the service had dealt with.

easyJet hasn’t cancelled its flights to the Greek island but said it “continued to closely monitor the situation”.

It said it advised customers travelling to Rhodes to check the status of their flight before travelling to the airport.

TUI said a small number of its hotels had been affected and said it was relocating customers to alternative accommodation.

The British Government advises British tourists in Rhodes to follow the guidance from emergency services.

Tourists planning to travel to Rhodes should check with their tour operator or hotel to check that their visit is not impacted.

In previous days, the wildfires were confined to the island’s mountainous areas but have since spread to populated areas.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly tweeted: “The safety of British nationals is our top priority.

“I encourage those in Rhodes, and those with family and friends there, to continue checking FCDO travel advice for updates.”

Greece has been suffering from a heatwave which has also led to the temporary closure of top attractions like the Acropolis.
