Jeremy Clarkson rushed to doctors after losing his hearing
Jeremy Clarkson revealed he lost his hearing in his left ear and the presenter admitted there were no warning signs – he was just “enveloped in a blanket of silence”.
The 63-year-old said he has often struggled with his hearing in recent years but things got progressively worse last week.
The former Top Gear presenter opened up about his health woes in his latest column as the on-screen star had to go on steroid medication.
His admission comes as he also described people being less understanding of his difficulty hearing, saying when he’s at home he’s constantly being asked to turn the volume down on the television.
The Clarkson’s Farm star said he had taken his dogs for a walk and over lunch he felt water in his left ear.

Writing in his column for The Times, Jeremy said: “And last week everything got worse.
“There was no pop; no trauma. One minute it was operating normally, and then there was nothing. I put my finger in my right ear and was enveloped instantly in a blanket of absolute silence.”
The small-screen star said that he had always sensed he could lose his eyesight but feared that losing his hearing would be worse.
He added it didn’t “bear thinking about” not being able to listen to music or birdsong.
Jeremy wrote: “Later that evening a doctor (I know, I’m private, OK shoot me) poked about in there with a torch and announced that all looked clear, so the problem must be where the ear connected to the brain. Scary stuff.
“And then it got scarier still because he said that I needed, immediately, to go on a course of heavy-duty steroids. This would mean taking 17 pills, five times a day.”
Despite being up all night fearing the worse outcome Jeremy was relieved when his hearing returned to its “normal, semi-useless state” the following day.
Jeremy questioned his doctor on whether he would be able to come off the steroid pills but was told, “No”.
He concluded: “I must stay with them, and I must get a hearing test, and I must see a specialist.”
Jeremy joked that he is now more concerned about the possible side effects of taking steroid medication which include, insomnia and irritability.
