Jeremy Clarkson ‘did not’ fall asleep at Wimbledon amid anger over ticket prices

Jeremy Clarkson, 63, has said there is no truth to reports that he rested his eyes during the “mesmerising performance” of the two athletes at Wimbledon.

The Grand Tour presenter also took the opportunity to address dismay from a “dreary little socialist with left-wing adenoids” over ticket prices at Wimbledon.

The broadcaster said a tweet had “cropped up” on his feed to say that the only people in the crowds at Wimbledon were ”people who liked Wimbledon”.

He typed in his The Sun column: “A dreary little socialist with left-wing adenoids and communistical hair cropped up on my social media feed this week to say that the only people in the crowds at Wimbledon were people who liked Wimbledon.

“Yes, mate. In the same way that the only people in your local pub are people who like drinking.”

“I think, however, he was trying to say that ticket prices are so high that ordinary tennis fans can’t afford to go,” Jeremy added.

On Wimbeldon’s website, it states tickets for Centre Court begin at £80 for day one and triple in price towards day 14.

The motoring enthusiast justified the yearly tennis tournament’s pricey tickets “as it covers an area of 42 acres in London” costing the club substantial amounts in council tax.

The grass on the courts also requires continuous maintenance from staff and can only get “money back” when they host the sports tournament once a year.

He finished: “That’s why they can’t sell tickets for 40p.”

Jeremy also gushed over the level of talent Wimbledon has seen this year as he gave high praise to Ukranian “beer enthusiast” Elina.

He called the match “spell-binding” despite being captured by the aforementioned publication appearing to be mid-sleep while watching the quarter-final.

Elina stunned the tennis world on Wednesday when she beat World No.1 Iga in the quarter-finals, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-2.

It comes after she returned to tennis in April having given birth in October last year.

“At the beginning of the tournament, if someone would tell me that I will be in the semi-final and beating world number one, I would just say that they’re crazy,” she told The Women’s Agenda

After the win, she acknowledged the devastation of the war in her home country of Ukraine, and how it had made her a stronger and better player.

“I think war made me stronger and also made me mentally stronger,” she said after the win. “Mentally I don’t take difficult situations as like a disaster, you know? There are worse things in life.”

Elina also said having her child has made her calmer and a “different person”.
