‘Jeopardy!’ legend James Holzhauer shades ABC for neglecting other show
I’ll take “throwing shade” for $1,000.
“Jeopardy!” legend James Holzhauer dissed ABC for giving his show “The Chase” the short end of the stick compared to the long-running quiz series.
Holzhauer, 38, took to Twitter to publicly call out the network for not putting his game show in the time slot directly after “Jeopardy! Masters” in May.
The BuzzerBlog Twitter account posted Friday about the rating increase for “The Chase.”
“Games did well last night for ABC but most interesting thing was the giant increase for #TheChase,” the blog account tweeted. “It was up 25% in the 18-49 demo from last episode and up nearly 60% in total viewers. It’s still a shame that The Chase wasn’t paired with Jeopardy Masters.”
The 32-time “Jeopardy!” winner quote-tweeted the statistics with a sarcastic response: “If only those two shows had some commonality that would suggest a shared fanbase.”
On the show, “three competitors must pit their wits and face off against a Chaser, a ruthless quiz genius determined to stop them from winning cash prizes,” the official show page says.
Holzhauer implied that since he’s one of the Chasers and he won the “Jeopardy! Masters” title, as well as both shows being trivia shows, it would’ve made the most sense to air them back to back.
Many fans agreed with Holzhauer, suggesting that the ratings would’ve been higher from the start had it been put in the time slot after the Masters competition for promotion.
“I like The Chase. I just never see it on,” one person admitted.
“Jeopardy & The Chase have Buzzy Cohen, right? I can see these shows together,” someone else pointed out.
“Some ABC bigwig probably said, ‘You can’t put them together because it’s too much blue on the screen for 2 hours straight’…” another quipped.
Along with Holzhauer, other “Jeopardy!” favorites and trivia legends such as Buzzy Cohen, Brad Rutter, Groce and Brandon Blackwell are also Chasers on “The Chase.”
Current “Jeopardy!” host Ken Jennings was formerly a Chaser, but stepped down for the hosting gig.
“The Chase” airs at 9 p.m. ET on ABC on Thursdays, and its third season kicked off on June 29.
