Jay Leno has made light of his ‘new face’ after being treated for serious burns sustained in a recent petrol fire accident.
The 72-year-old television host and comedian suffered ‘deep second-degree’ and possibly third-degree burns in November when a car he was working on exploded in Burbank, California.
Leno has been on the road to recovery ever since being discharged from hospital in recent weeks and hasn’t lost his sense of humour either, having poked fun at the whole shebang in his latest column.
He began by stressing he didn’t have any hangups over the incident, writing: ‘But really, it was an accident, that’s all.
‘Anybody who works with their hands on a regular basis is going to have an accident at some point. If you play football, you get a concussion or a broken leg. Anything you do, there’s a risk factor.’
He then joked: ‘Eight days later, I had a brand new face. And it’s better than what was there before.’
Concluding his Wall Street Journal column, Leno added: ‘There’s nothing worse than whiny celebrities. If you joke about it, people laugh along with you.’
The former host of The Tonight Show was previously said to be thankful for the care he had received following the incident and ‘very appreciative of all the well wishes’.
After being discharged from hospital, Dr Peter Grossman said he was ‘pleased with Jay’s progress’ and ‘optimistic’ that Leno would make a full recovery.
‘Jay would like to let everyone know how thankful he is for the care he received, and is very appreciative of all of the well wishes,’ read a statement from the Grossman Burn Centre, shared with US media.
‘He is looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with his family and friends and wishes everyone a wonderful holiday.’
The centre shared a picture of Leno with several hospital staff, which showed visible burn scars on his face, neck, and hand.
At the time of the incident, the presenter said he was ‘okay’ but in recovery after the incident.
‘I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire,” he said in a statement shared with the PA news agency.
‘I am okay. Just need a week or two to get back on my feet.’
