Jay Blades addresses claim he broke royal protocol with King Charles
Jay Blades was visited by King Charles III, 73, at The Repair Shop before his accession to the throne, after initially turning him down due to his busy schedule. After finally managing to fit the new monarch in, the special episode aired on Wednesday leaving many fans wanting to know more about their meeting.
Jay and the team were tasked to restore two items that Charles had selected; an 18th-century bracket clock from the collection at The Prince’s Foundation’s Dumfries House headquarters and a piece of Wemyss Ware made for Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee.
In a Q&A after the show, Jay, 52, responded to a fan who questioned whether or not he broke royal protocol by touching the then Prince.
In the episode, the furniture restorer was seen placing his hand on Charles’ arm as he handed him over a cup of tea.
Addressing the moment on Instagram, he said: “It is against royal protocol but also when you’re from the East End, you have a different type of protocol.
“So, the two protocols came together and he was cool with it and I was cool with it.

“It was kind of like East End meets West End and we came together.
“If you see how I touched him and he touched me, you’ll see it was mutual.”
On the official royal website, it claims there are no obligatory codes of behaviour when meeting a member of the Royal Family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms.
For men, this is a neck bow (from the head only) whilst women do a small curtsy. Other people prefer to shake hands in the usual way.
For male members of the Royal Family the same rules apply, with the title used in the first instance being ‘Your Royal Highness’ and subsequently ‘Sir’.
Throughout the special, fans also noticed how natural Jay was with the royal, particularly when they exchanged banter.
The BBC star revealed that he wasn’t actually nervous to meet Charles, but felt relaxed as he treated him like normal.
He explained: “I viewed him as anyone else who walked into the barn. It’s not an arrogance, I just feel like everyone is the same.
“He is just a normal person and his love for craft is unbelievable.”
Jay went on to say of their jokes together: “I am a cheeky chappy, but I didn’t show no disrepect to him, it was all banter.”
The BBC star also told fans that there was no script or much preperation for the episode, but just that they were going to have “a chinwag” with the royal.
He described the monarch as “a funny, down to earth guy” who has “banter”.
On whether they’d meet again, Jay swiftly moved on from the question but later said he liked the idea of the pair learning pottery together one day.
The Repair Shop: A Royal Visit is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
