Despite this clarification, the joke has persisted over the years and resurfaces during each Met Gala event. Contrary to the popular meme, nobody actually fell down the stairs at the Met Gala. The image that is commonly used for the meme actually depicts an incident from the 2011 Cannes Film Festival in France. During the festival, an unidentified man attempted to crash the event and ended up falling down the stairs in the midst of the chaos.
