Jane Fonda: Jennifer Lopez never apologized for cutting my face during scene
Jane Fonda still hasn’t gotten an apology from “Monster-in-Law” co-star Jennifer Lopez after she sliced her eyebrow open doing their fight in the 2005 rom-com.
The “Hustlers” star, 53, and the Oscar winner, 85, got into a hilarious slap quarrel in one scene in the iconic film.
However, Lopez has yet to express her regret over the moment 18 years ago.
During a recent appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Fonda explained that the Bronx native accidentally cut her eyebrow with the engagement ring she wore for the scene.
“The thing that comes to mind right away is we have a slapping scene,” the “Grace and Frankie” star said.
“I slap her, she slaps me, I slap her. Well Jennifer, she had this enormous diamond ring, and so when she slapped me one of the times, it cut open across my eyebrow,” she recalled.
“And she’s never apologized,” Fonda continued.
Lopez once spoke about the incident in a 2019 YouTube video, saying she was filled with fear when it came her time to punch Fonda.
“I was so afraid to hit Jane Fonda in the face or hurt her in any way, really,” the “Jenny from the Block” crooner said.
“Her character was very much like her, and my character at the time was very much like me,” Lopez added. “I was so afraid of her and she was so brave and like, ‘Just hit me. Don’t worry about it, it’s going to be fine.’”
In the comedy, Fonda played an overbearing mother-in-law who does everything in her power to get rid of her son’s (played by Michael Vartan) soon-to-be wife (Lopez). The warring women spend the movie at each other’s throats.
J.Lo also explained how the slap scene “took on a life of its own in a way that we never imagined.” The two just kept on hitting one another until one of them finally stopped.
Fonda revealed in a 2015 interview on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” how she will always be grateful for the opportunity to star in “Monster-in-Law.”
The actress noted she took a break from acting in the 1990s because she “wasn’t enjoying it anymore,” and the film marked her first role in 15 years.
“If I feel bad about myself, it’s hard for me to be creative. So I just left for 15 years,” the “On Golden Pond” actress revealed. “I said to myself, ‘I think I can find joy in acting again,’ and so I came back with the film ‘Monster-in-Law,’ which was the only smart career thing I ever did.”
“I thought, ‘People are going to come to the movie to see J.Lo, Jennifer Lopez,’” she said, “‘but they’ll rediscover Fonda,’ and that’s what happened.”
