James May in awkward driving blunder as he ‘reverses car into man’s fence’

The Grand Tour star James May, 60, is often teased over his driving prowess by his co-presenters Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond, with the duo branding him ‘Captain Slow’ during their time on Top Gear.

However, the famously cautious driver suffered an unfortunate driving blunder while out in his Land Rover today.

Taking to Twitter to own up to the mishap, James admitted he had “just reversed my Land Rover into a man’s fence”.

Detailing the damage, the star told his 3.2 million followers: “I just reversed my Land Rover into a man’s fence, broke it, and he hadn’t even finished building it yet.”

Luckily for James, the man’s reaction was better than he had been expecting.

“He was surprisingly decent about it all,” the motoring enthusiast confirmed.

It wasn’t long before fans teased James on his error, with one replying: “The damage had to be minimal…Captain Slow…”

“He has a story to tell. Captain Slow destroyed my fence,” another Twitter user quipped.

A third fan joked: “I’m sure you didn’t mean to cause any ofFence.”

A fourth Twitter user hit back at James: “Was you driving an Aston Martin through Greater Manchester last weekend?

“If so, you drive like a w****r.”

Unfazed by the swipe, James responded: “No, last weekend I was driving a Ferrari through Wiltshire like a t****r.”

It comes after James revealed he wants the speed limit on the majority of Britain’s roads reduced to 20 miles an hour.

James, who frequently drives in supercars as part of Amazon Prime Video series The Grand Tour, claimed 30mph is too dangerous.

The TV star told Martha Kearney on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I live in Hammersmith in west London, which is an area where people seem particularly fond of just sort of running out into the street without looking, which is their prerogative because they’re people, not machines.

“But 20mph is plenty fast enough and 30 does feel too fast.

“To be honest, if you could go around somewhere like London or Manchester or Birmingham at a constant 20mph you’d be absolutely delighted.”
