James Martin slammed for ‘overpriced’ hotel experience costing more than £400

Guests are complaining about James Martin’s experience offer at The Lygon Arms hotel.

The 51-year-old partnered up with the Cotswolds venue in January and opened his new restaurants Grill and Tavern there in March.

Under his name, an exclusive experience costing a minimum of £457 per night, consists of a compulsory two-night stay with breakfast included, afternoon tea, a gift from the chef and full use of spa facilities.

As part of the deal, guests also get a £65 per person credit at his on-site eatery, however, prices have been criticised.

Starters on the menu such as a Prawn Cocktail, Chicken Caesar Salad and Garden Green Salad range from £12 to £22.

Mains also include Moules-Frites at a price of £26 while a fillet steak would be £38.

With drinks and sides typically added to a meal, this could mean guests have to spend more of their own money for the experience.

Visitor Susan Betley said of her time there: “@jamesmartinchef the worst bar in England, avoid at all costs (cos it will cost a fortune) is The bar owned by James Martin at the lygon Arms Broadway! Overpriced and absolutely awful.”(sic)

According to the Daily Mail online another named Charlie James wrote: “We had lunch in the James Martin Grill. Very disappointed.

“Very slow and disjointed service, we were a group of eight. Our drinks took over an hour.

“I’m afraid when you franchise out to a celebrity chef you are immediately downgrading your ambitions.”

Neil Ibbetson added he was also “very” disappointed with the service after dining on a table of eight.

Despite the complaints, others have praised the food at the restaurant.

Visitor Peter Brook took to Twitter to brand the dessert knickerbocker glory “delicious”.

In response, James wrote: “Thank you on behalf of the whole team for these amazing words!

“It’s down to all of the team members who do put such an incredible amount of effort into making it special for our customers.

“Team this is what is so special about our place and you all who work here, thank you!”

Debbie Hayes added: “I totally agree, I visited your restaurant last year, the meal was delicious, can’t wait to visit again.”

Graeme Nesbitt, General Manager of The Lygon Arms, told Express.co.uk: “Our new partnership with James Martin at The Lygon Arms has been well received and the vast majority of the 17,000 guests we have served since we launched in January have been absolutely delighted with the new offer in both Grill and Tavern.

“As with any new venture we have inevitably experienced a few teething problems and growing pains, however whenever we have knowingly dropped a ball we have responded proactively and directly to make amends. We continue to strive to exceed the expectations of all of our guests.”

Express.co.uk has contacted a spokesperson for James Martin for further comment.
