James Martin details big ‘mistake’ that inspired signature dish

Celebrity chef James Martin, 50, has divulged the secret behind one of his restaurant’s signature desserts was needing to “use up” ingredients due to an ordering blunder.

Recently confirming his appearance at the Yorkshire Dales Food & Drink Festival, the chef embarked on a questions and answers session and revealed all.

When asked what has inspired his signature dishes, he said, “There are many things”.

“Travel, experience, mistakes, other chefs, ingredients,” he continued.

“But some of mine have come about through trial and error and perseverance and some via mistakes.”

James then stated that one of his favourite desserts – which has been a staple on his restaurant’s menu for almost 30 years – was conceived out of error.

“The bread & butter pudding with white chocolate & whiskey,” he detailed.

“My old head chef ordered 33 dozen instead of a dozen so I had to use them up.”

“Butter… and salt, the importance of salt in cooking and seasoning.

“I just love cooking with great ingredients and seasonal ingredients as well as travelling.

“So currently I am travelling through Spain, experiencing new and exciting ingredients and I’ve just tasted the best beef I’ve ever tasted in my life.”

Along the lines of the sensational dessert, James also detailed what his favourite ingredients are to cook with.

This weekend’s episode of James Martin’s Saturday Morning show will be broadcasted today at 9:25 am.

The 50-year-old chef will be joined by comedian Sanjeev Bhaskar, 59.

With help from Paul Ainsworth, Tommy Banks and John Hooker, James and Sanjeev will be creating some delectable dishes to enjoy during this year’s Soccer Aid competition.

Later this year, the Yorkshire native is set to embark on his 22-date UK tour. Before then though, we could see some more James Martin fronted TV shows.

He stated: “I’m currently travelling and filming for ITV a new Spanish series so will be back after and the big Tour starts in Oct/Nov where I’m on the ground, ending at the London Palladium.

“We go anywhere from Scotland, Wales right down to London & everywhere else in between,” he added.

The James Martin Live tour kicks off at the Blackpool Opera House on October 19 before heading to Westcliff-on-Sea, Ipswich and Birmingham.

The show, which will include live cooking demonstrations and fun tasks, will conclude with a special show at the London Palladium on November 12.

You can catch James presenting on ITV every Saturday morning.
