James Corden snatches his phone away after Prince Harry calls

James Corden is set to bid farewell to The Late Late Show after dramatically revealing last year that he was stepping down after eight years at the helm.

The 44-year-old opened up about his departure in a new interview but was soon distracted after he received a text message from the Duke of Sussex.

The TV presenter spoke candidly about his decision to leave late-night television and return to the UK.

Speaking to The Sun, James commented: “The biggest thing for me at the moment is overseeing the move. We have to be there for our kids.”

It was during this moment the comedian’s phone beeped twice as he and the interviewer stared at the screen and up popped “Harry’s New”.

According to the publication, it was Prince Harry who was messaging James but instead of responding he “batted” the interviewer’s hand away, who attempted to “read his messages”.

“Oh God, wouldn’t you just love to see these,” he cheekily commented, snatching his iPhone away.

Despite that, he wasn’t at all keen to dive into the current royal debate with the interviewer, insisting: “It’s not fair!”

James and Harry have been close friends for a number of years and the royal had one of his first interviews with the Late Late Show host after stepping down from the royal family in 2020.

Since March 2020, Harry and Meghan have been living in Montecito, California – and James and his wife, Julia Carey, live about an hour and a half away.

In an interview with the same publication last year, the Gavin and Stacey actor said the couple’s children enjoy playdates together.

James revealed that he has visited Harry and Meghan’s home: “I have. It was more a sort of play date scenario [with the kids]. Then we went out for dinner after, it was lovely.”

He added that he admired Harry and Meghan for taking a step back from the royal family.

“I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for Harry, and anyone who has been around him and spent time with him would feel exactly the same way,” James said.

He added the prince is a “devoted and loving husband and father” and an incredibly brave individual.

Meanwhile, the longstanding late-night presenter is now wrapping up his programme the Late Late Show.

Speaking to Zoe Ball on her Radio 2 show, he said: “It’s a strange one, I haven’t really felt like this before. I remember when we did the last episode of Gavin and Stacey, I remember sitting with Ruth Jones and crying, but that was done in blocks, we’d film it, go off and then come again.

“But the Late Late show has been a pretty consistent, it’s been 8 years, tomorrow will be 100th show – crazy!”
