James Cameron has now set the record straight on rumours he could be directing a film based on the OceanGate submersible tragedy.
On June 18, the submersible Titan imploded during an expedition to the Titanic wreck, killing five passengers.
However, the surface was unsure of what had happened in the days that followed, leading to speculation the passengers could be still alive and slowly running out of oxygen.
On Friday, The Sun reported that a major streaming network had approached Cameron to direct a film based on the event.
He’s now taken to Twitter to shut down these reports.
“I don’t respond to offensive rumors in the media usually, but I need to now,” he wrote.
“I’m NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be.”
OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush was one of the five confirmed to be killed in the disaster.
Also on board were Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman Dawood, billionaire Hamish Harding and diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet.
The Coast Guard confirmed all five passengers had died in the implosion last month after a five-day search for the missing vessel.
Cameron reflected on the tragic events at the time, which he remarked were eerily similar to the original Titanic disaster in 1912.
“I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself,” he told ABC.
“Where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night and many people died as a result,
“For us, it’s a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded.
“To take place at the same exact site with all the diving that’s going on all around the world, I think it’s just astonishing. It’s really quite surreal.”
Although Cameron won’t be attached, reports do seem to suggest it won’t be long before the tragic event is dramatised for a major streaming platform.
