James Brolin speaks out about successful 25-year marriage to Barbra Streisand
Superstar Barbra Streisand and actor James Brolin celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary today and James believes the secret of their successful union is therapy.
Earlier this year the 82-year-old Hollywood star spoke out about the reasons that their marriage has lasted.
Talking to TMZ while signing autographs for fans he said his advice for a happy marriage is: “Have a mediator you both are easy sitting with and resolving things. It solves it immediately.”
For those who baulk at the thoughts of paying a therapist he intimated that a “smart friend” could also fit the bill once a couple are prepared to “negotiate”.
“Learn to negotiate,” he stated. “There’s always one of the two people that cop out and say, ‘Aaah, I tried that. Didn’t work.’”
Sharing more of his wisdom the handsome star advised couples to “stick with it” and “cry together.”
His advice is clearly working for the couple who married in 1998, just two years after meeting on a blind date at a dinner party in 1996.
Their wedding, which took place in the backyard of Barbra’s Malibu home, was a star-studded event with guests including John Travolta, Kelly Preston, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Quincy Jones and Sydney Pollack.
In his wedding speech, it was clear James was besotted with his new bride.
“I can’t tell you how lucky I am that this would happen to me so late in life,” he told the guests.
“Every night is a new adventure. Sleeping is a waste of time. I can’t wait to see her again in the morning,” he gushed.
Instead of a speech, Barbra paid tribute to her husband doing what she does best – she serenaded him with two new love songs.
Fans are eagerly awaiting Barbra’s memoir which is set for a November release however it appears that it won’t give much insight into her romance with James.
Speaking on The View in April he said: “She says there’s a second book – it kind of ends when we meet so I think there’s little bit of me.
“But somebody who did read it in advance said it’s the most incredible book about filmmaking.
“But what I heard across the bed when she’s on the phone all the time and she’s rewriting was really stories of her life.
So I think it’s a little bit of everything,” he revealed to the panel.
“But I think it’s a lot about courage in the face of opposition which we all know about.”
