Jack Dee admits ‘I’m not as miserable as people might think’

Comedian Jack Dee has admitted he’s “not as miserable as people might think” in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk.

Ahead of taking his stand-up act to Henley Festival next month, the 61-year-old BBC radio star shared a behind-the-scenes insight into what he’s really like away from the spotlight.

Jack, who is best known for capturing audiences with his signature dry humour and deadpan delivery, has most recently toured his brand-new show titled Jack Dee: Off The Telly around Europe.

Given the I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue host’s generally straight-faced demeanour on stage, many fans will probably wonder whether his public persona is similar to his real personality.

Asked if he ever finds it hard separating his on-stage and off-stage self, Jack said: “I think sometimes you have to remind yourself you’re not on stage.

Jack, who also won the first-ever season of Celebrity Big Brother back in 2001, was also quizzed on how he tries to get the crowd on his side when performing at a comedy gig.

He explained: “I mean, I guess a lot of my thing has been about… My presence on stage is about not being too worried if my audience like me or not.

“I think it’s quite a simple remedy for the problem of getting the audience on your side.

“Because really what the audience wants is to feel confident with you, and they get that from your confidence.

“If they think you’re nervous or desperate to be liked then you’re making it harder for the audience. It’s not in my personality to be like that anyway.”

Asked about the upcoming Henley Festival, Jack confirmed: “I’m looking forward to Henley Festival because it’s always good and I think it’ll be a really nice show.”

As well as his comedy tour, Jack is also presenting a podcast with fellow comedian Seann Walsh called Oh My Dog!

During the show, Jack and Seann interview various different stars and other high-profile people who own dogs and get “a lovely peek into their lives” away from the world of Showbiz.

“I think actually dog owners have a potty streak, a mad streak in them, which we try to get into,” Jack added.
