“Traveling helps me to live! If I don’t travel for a long time, I start to feel bad,” he says. “So, I changed Descartes’ Cogito ergo sum [I think, therefore I am] to I travel. Therefore I am, and I live my life by that.”
Maggio strongly advocates for travel as a way of life, claiming that even small trips can benefit your well-being. He believes travel gives you a fresh perspective and valuable insight into yourself and the world around you.

It also allows us to delve into events like the pandemic to see the impact on others worldwide, which inspired one of his biggest projects, Other Places.
In a photo contest, Maggio encouraged people worldwide to submit photos of how their local community was coping with COVID-19 lockdowns using the hashtag #otherplacesnet.
The idea was to capture the normality of this historical event and give hope at the same time that mainstream media offered doom and gloom.
“COVID changed everything,” he says. “As a photographer, it dramatically decreased the number of my trips worldwide, so I decided to get creative.”
The project collected faces and situations from around the world, preserving the moment and telling the story of beauty that lay beneath the challenging times. And it was such a success. Maggio has since turned it into a book.
Ultimately, his work is an inspirational reminder that life is a journey of self-discovery. We should always strive to embrace new experiences, open our hearts and minds to the unknown, and see where life takes us.
