Is your boyfriend waving any of these fashion beige flags?
Is your man’s wardrobe best described as ‘ok’?
Are his favourite ‘fits just… fine?
Worry not, because you won’t be the only person with a boyfriend who’s waving fashion beige flags – and it’s definitely not a bad thing.
As Jolyon Varley, co-founder of the agency OK COOL explained: ‘Beige flags are essentially boring traits, but they’re not deemed as negative like red flags in the eyes of the internet.
‘They’re much more neutral, as their colour suggests. Instead, think of them as an endearingly uninteresting characteristic – something that can be considered both adorable and embarrassing.’
With that being said, if you want to not-so-subtly hint that he’s due a little shopping trip, feel free to send this list of common fashion beige flags his way…
Holey underwear
No, it’s not a mortal sin to have holes in your underwear, but it’s not the sexiest thing in the world either.
Megan, head stylist of fashion destination SilkFred, said: ‘Keeping underwear that has significant holes in them is a serious beige flag.
‘No, it’s not hurting anyone, but it’s unsightly for us to see and also makes us seriously concerned for their level of self-care.
‘However, it does mean you can buy them new boxers for Christmas or their birthday without it feeling like a cop-out.’
Ankle socks
Sometimes boys like to get their little ankles out and that’s fine, but these days statement socks reign supreme in the fashion world.
Megan said: ‘Growing up as a millennial, the idea of showing socks was a huge no-no, with many of us trying to find the smallest sock possible. However, Gen-Z has embraced socks in a big way, with Gen-Z cover girl Emma Chamberlain rarely seen without her signature scrunched socks.
‘In 2023, it’s all using your socks as an accent to the rest of your outfit, and making sure people know about it.’
T-shirt repeating
Does your man have the exact same shirt in his wardrobe at least three times over? You won’t be the only one.
‘The thing about men’s fashion is that, until recently, it hasn’t been that interesting,’ said Megan. ‘Just have a look at the evolution of men’s fashion at the Met Gala. While women have a bevy of fashion inspo, retailers, and styles to choose from and play with, it’s quite likely your boyfriend has two or three silhouettes that have always worked for them.
‘If your boyfriend has found “his colour”, I guess we just have to admire it and take notes from that kind of rigid decisiveness.’
Having that ‘one suit’
Just because cishet men can get away with having one fancy outfit they can wear to any occasion doesn’t mean they should. Why not have a little fun with your formal wear, lads?
Megan said: ‘Whilst us girls normally have items we wear A LOT day-to-day, like jeans, a white tee, or our comfiest trainers, we do seem to want to buy new dresses for every occasion, which means we can feel a certain type of resentment for our boyfriends who don’t need to give a special outfit a second thought.
‘However, buying an outfit in a classic style, in an enduring colour like cream or black, will mean you can spend your hard-earned money on something you can wear again and again.
‘Also, switching up the accessories and accents on an outfit you’ve worn before can make a world of difference and stem that jealousy towards your boyfriend.’
