Is Too Much Gaming Interfering with Children’s’ Education? -Samra Azeem, Plumstead Manor School

The “how gaming affects education” debate has been around for a long period of time. But what is all the fuss about really? Gaming is both detrimental to educational studies yet beneficial depending on how one uses it.

Apart from being a form of escapism and enjoyment, to help with your mental health and wellbeing, other benefits to gaming are that it helps with being more creative, can help with problem-solving skills, encourages collaborative working, and builds teamwork skills.

A lot of these games are very educational and need to use the following to progress:

  • Strategy Thinking
  • Hand-Eye Co-ordination
  • Problem-solving

Games have disadvantages too:

  • Addiction
  • Neglecting other responsibilities- getting behind in your education
  • Being less sociable

We can see that gaming has both positive and negative impacts on education. Gaming can be beneficial to learning as it can be more engaging and fun. Yet, many can disregard the educational aspect of it, and simply enjoy and play. Many popular games, including Fortnite, PUBG, COD, and Minecraft, have huge audiences- with varying ages- across the world, and still probably maintain a good balance between enjoyment and playing for fun, whilst still learning.
