IPL 2023: Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings in first Qualifier on 23 May
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday became the second team to qualify for the playoffs and will play against the table toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) in Qualifier 1 on 23 May. The teams playing Qualifiers have an advantage and get two chances to qualify for the finals. The winning team will go straight to the finals, while the losing team will play Qualifier 2 on 26 May.
The presence of CSK in the Qualifiers is confirmed as the team has 17 points, and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) which is playing its last match has the ability to reach 17 points only (if it wins against KKR). With the same points, the Net Run Rate (NRR) will become the basis for the ranking in the points table. CSK has an NRR of +0.652, while LSG has an NRR of +0.304.
LSG is expected to finish third on the points table and the race for the fourth spot is still on, with RCB pushing some extra efforts to defend its position in the Top 4. On Sunday, in a high-stakes double-header Mumbai Indians (MI) will play its last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad and RCB will go against GT. For both RCB and MI, it will be ‘do or die’ matches.
GT and CSK seem to be fully prepared for Qualifiers 1. Like last year, Hardik Pandya-led GT has performed exceptionally well in the tournament and lost just four matches. For MS Dhoni-led CSK, things were not that smooth as the team didn’t have the best start, but slowly caught up in the tournament and is expected to fight like champions during the crucial matches ahead.
