iPhone 14 Pro Preview: All about refinement
iPhone 14 Pro Intro
If you are excited about the latest and most advanced mobile technology, but don’t want to carry a giant brick-sized device in your pocket, the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro is probably the device for you.
It’s way more expensive than the “default” iPhone 14 version, but it comes with a few treats that most tech lovers will find essential. First is a smooth 120Hz ProMotion screen, and then also the fastest chip on a phone in 2022, improved cameras, including a zoom camera that captures great portraits, and all of that in a modernized design that gets rid of the notch and has thin bezels for a more immersive edge-to-edge screen.
What’s new about the device
- Replaced notch with pill shaped cutout
- Slimmer bezels, narrower screen aspect ratio
- Faster, Apple A16 chip
- Higher res, 48MP main camera with 8K video recording
- Always-on display

iPhone 14 Pro Specs
An overview of the iPhone 14 Pro specs reveals that Apple has focused in two areas: it has a brand new A16 Bionic processor that is rumored to be slightly faster, but also more power efficient which should help with battery life; and then, it has a new, higher resolution 48MP main camera that is theoretically capable of recording 8K video.

The rest doesn’t seem to have changed all that much, and overall, the iPhone 14 Pro looks quite similar to its predecessor, the 13 Pro.
iPhone 14 Models
The iPhone 14 Pro is one of four new iPhone 14 series devices.
- iPhone 14 — cheapest in the series, 6.1″ screen, 60Hz refresh rate, uses previous-gen A15 chip
- iPhone 14 Max — large 6.7″ screen, 60Hz refresh rate, A15 chip, big battery
- iPhone 14 Pro Max — large 6.7″ screen, 120Hz refresh rate, triple camera, A16 chip, big battery
iPhone 14 Pro Design & Colors
With flat sides and a triple camera on the back, the iPhone 14 Pro design has not changed radically in the past two years. Apple still uses the latest toughened glass on the back and the front, with a shiny stainless frame in the middle, a premium design that looks good, but is just a bit heavier than you’d expect from a 6.1-inch phone.
But look closer and you will notice that the iPhone 14 Pro design has evolved. First, the notch on the front is replaced with a new pill shaped cutout which doesn’t take up quite as much space and subjectively looks better. The borders around the screen are now thinner, for a more immersive edge-to-edge screen feel. Also, the camera system on the back now takes up even more space, yet another size increase from the already huge camera system on last year’s model.
The buttons haven’t changed, you have an oversized power button on the right, and we love that it’s so large and easy to find with a thumb even if you are not looking at the phone. And then, the volume keys are on the left side. On the bottom, you still have Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector (next year’s iPhone 15 series are rumored to switch to a USB-C port, the same one that Android phones use).
- Graphite (aka Black)
- Silver (aka White)
- Gold
- Purple
As you can see, the light and cheerful Sierra Blue from last year is rumored to be replaced with a new purple shade. We also don’t expect to see a green model at launch (we do have a green version of the iPhone 13 Pro currently).
IP68 water and dust protection are still available here, so the phone feels protected from the elements.
iPhone 14 Pro Display
Always On Display might change the way you use your iPhone
The screen has not changed much on the iPhone 14 Pro: same 6.1 inch size, same OLED technology, same 1170p resolution. It supports ProMotion too, Apple’s fancy name for its fast refresh rate tech, but this year the refresh rate can go all the way down from 1Hz to 120Hz, while the previous model could only hit a 10Hz in its lowest setting.
Having a super low 1Hz refresh rate option opens more possibilities: it can help optimize battery life, but it can also be use to show an “Always On Screen” with snippets of information you can glance at without ever unlocking the phone. The option has been available on Android phones for years, but this one might have a bit of that Apple polish to make it feel more refined.
The screen on the 14 Pro will also have a slightly different, 20:9 aspect ratio, so it will be a slightly narrower screen compared to the 19.5:9 screens Apple used in previous iPhones.
As for biometrics, you still have Face ID, but this time the whole system is built in a much smaller, pill-shaped cutout. It all works the same way though, and hasn’t lost the secure element, so Face ID is unchanged. Despite early rumors, the iPhone 14 Pro does NOT have a fingerprint scanner of any kind.
iPhone 14 Pro Camera
For the first time on an iPhone, a high res camera
It’s hard to say whether the iPhone has the best camera out of all smartphones, but it sure is at the top, and sure as hell, Apple has improved it with the iPhone 14 Pro.
The main camera in particular gets a larger and higher resolution sensor, jumping from the 12MP camera we used to have on previous models to a much more impressive 48MP camera on the 14 Pro. Rumors also say the ultra-wide camera is getting an upgrade, and so is the front camera, which will now have auto focusing capabilities. This leaves the 3X telephoto lens as the only one that has not received a hardware overhaul.
With this in mind, here are your rumored iPhone 14 Pro camera specs:
- 48MP main camera
- 12MP ultra-wide
- 12MP 3X telephoto
- 12MP front cam with AF
There are multiple consequences of having a high-res camera, but expectations are that Apple will use pixel binning, so you will still end up with 12MP actual photos. You might be able to flip a switch to get a 48MP photo when you need it, but it will probably not be the default option.
The benefit, however, will be not only more abundant detail, but also supposedly improved low light performance.
A high res camera also allows for 8K video, which is rumored to be another impressive new feature only available on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models.
iPhone 14 Pro Performance & Benchmarks
New A16 chip is faster, but most importantly – more power efficient
The new Apple A16 Bionic chip is the biggest mystery of the iPhone launch.
For months, rumors claimed Apple will use a new manufacturing process, but last minute whispers say that the company uses the same process node, so the gains in performance might not be as big as hoped. However, the surprising advantage of this new chip might be how power efficient it is and that will help battery life of course.
Rumors also suggest that Apple will use 6GB of RAM, same amount as on previous models, but the memory will be of the faster LPDDR5 kind. Again, something to be confirmed soon, but an exciting rumor nonetheless.
We will be updating this section with a lot more substantial rumors and our own testing of this processor soon, so check back here after the official launch.
iPhone 14 Pro Connectivity
The whole iPhone 14 series, including the 14 Pro, will almost certainly use Qualcomm’s X65 modem. Apple was rumored to toy around with the idea of making its own modem, but it seems that project has not advanced well, and all new iPhones will still run on the good and reliable, latest gen Qualcomm modems.
This latest X65 modem supports all the important bands for the US, including new frequencies like the 3.45GHz 5G bands that AT&T is rolling out.
We are yet to see if the phone will support newer Wi-Fi standards like Wi-Fi 6E.
iPhone 14 Pro and iOS 16: new features
The iPhone 14 Pro launches with the latest iOS installment, iOS 16, with the new customizable lock screen, media player, and other refinements, but of course all of those features will also come to older iPhones, which are also getting updated to the new software.
iPhone 14 Pro Battery
The iPhone 14 Pro succeeds the 13 Pro, which came with a 3,095mAh battery, bigger than previous editions.
And the 14 Pro has big shoes to fill as the predecessor delivered excellent battery life.
We don’t expect to see a change in the physical size of the iPhone 14 Pro battery, but thanks to a more power efficient processor, we do hope to see a slight increase in battery life. Just don’t get your hopes high for some sort of ground-breaking improvements here.
iPhone 14 Pro Charging Speeds
iPhones traditionally have not had the fastest charging speeds compared to the competition, and the iPhone 14 Pro is not doing much to change that.
We expect the 14 Pro to have 20W charging speeds, same as on the preceding 13 Pro model. Keep in mind, that unofficially the 13 Pro actually supported speeds of around 23W, which means that it makes sense to pair the phone with a faster charger and we would suggest a reliable 30W charger. Don’t forget that there is no charger included in the box with the iPhone 14 Pro (there is only a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box), so you need to purchase the charging brick separately.
The iPhone 14 Pro also comes with MagSafe wireless charging at speeds of up to 15W, same as on the predecessor.
iPhone 14 Pro Audio Quality and Haptics
The iPhone 14 Pro largely keeps the audio system from the 13 Pro: you have a bottom firing speaker helped by a secondary speaker located in the earpiece.
There is no 3.5mm headphone jack on the iPhone 14 Pro.
Haptics also seem unchanged with the same Taptic Engine vibration motor as we had on previous iPhones, but that is not a complaint at all: it’s one of the best in the industry!
iPhone 14 Pro Competitors
The thing with Apple devices is that once you enter that ecosystem, it’s hard to look outside for alternatives, but there certainly are some very good devices that you should at least consider.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the first thing that comes to mind. It has a large screen, big battery, fast performance, and an S Pen that you can use to jot down notes and draw. It also has a 10X zoom lens that allows you to capture great photos and videos, which you cannot get on an iPhone. But that might just be too big a phone for those looking for a modest sized device, so the regular Galaxy S22 might be a better fit with its more compact dimensions.
The upcoming Google Pixel 7 is shaping up as one solid contender as well, but that is only coming at the end of October, so it is not out just yet, and we wouldn’t recommend buying the current Pixel 6 as it is nearly a year old now and has some well documented issues with its slow fingerprint scanner.
iPhone 14 Pro Summary
The iPhone 14 Pro is a device that you cannot avoid in the conversation of the best phone around. It combines a reasonable 6.1″ size with incredibly powerful performance, and while many other phones deliver the performance, there are currently only a few options that do that at this compact form factor.
It shows Apple’s relentless focus on delivering the very best and improving the fundamentals of the smartphone experience: the processor, the camera, and the software. The iPhone 14 Pro is not as novel or exciting as foldable phones or some other experimental gadget, but it’s a tried and tested form factor that will not disappoint and that will be supported diligently for years to come.
