A recent market research report highlights 2022 as a successful year for Apple, with the Cupertino-based tech giant leading worldwide smartphone shipments. In the report, eight of Apple’s smartphone models made it to the list of top 10 best-selling smartphones. The iPhone 13, which was launched in 2021, secured the first position as the best-selling model, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max followed at second and third positions, respectively. Other Apple models in the list include the iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 12, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone SE (2022). Meanwhile, Samsung secured two spots on the top-10 list with entry-level Galaxy A series smartphones.
According to the latestCounterpoint Research’s Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker report by market research firm Counterpoint Research, the iPhone 13 was the best-selling phone of 2022. Launched in 2021, the smartphone, powered by Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, accounted for 28% of iPhone sales. The surge in demand for the older iPhone 13 series model is attributed to price cuts following the launch of the iPhone 14 series in September 2021. The iPhone 13 was the top-selling smartphone in several countries, including China, France, Germany, the US, and the UK.
The report also revealed that the iPhone 13 Pro Max ranked second on the list of best-selling smartphones in 2022, while the recently launched iPhone 14 Pro Max secured third place. The report further stated that Pro Max models in the iPhone series sold more units than their Pro and base counterparts in 2022. Samsung’s Galaxy A13, a budget-friendly smartphone, secured the fourth position on the list, with the iPhone 13 Pro coming in fifth place.
As per the Counterpoint Research’s Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker report, the iPhone 12 occupied the sixth position, while the new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro came in at seventh and eighth positions, respectively. The budget-friendly iPhone SE (2022) secured the ninth spot, and Samsung’s Galaxy A03 rounded out the top ten. The entry-level Galaxy A13 from Samsung was ranked fourth, and the iPhone 13 Pro came in a close fifth position. The report indicates that the Pro Max version of an iPhone series accounted for a larger portion of sales than the Pro and base models in 2022. Apple has become the first brand to capture eight spots on the list of top 10 best-selling smartphones, with the iPhone 13 being the best-selling model.
The report also adds that there is an expectation that the top 10 smartphones will increase their share in 2023 as brands focus on clearing inventory and optimising their launches. The research firm predicts that brands will make their portfolios leaner this year to minimise cannibalisation.
