Investigation into Bromley nursery child cruelty allegations still ongoing a year on

Four female employees, aged between 18 and 28, at Lemongrove Nursery, were arrested on suspicion of child cruelty.

It was alleged that a two-year-old child was physically assaulted by staff at the Hook Farm Road nursery on May 20, 2022.

The staff were subsequently released on bail. 

Officers say there were no apparent physical injuries to the child.  

Two further female members employees were interviewed voluntarily. 

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police confirmed today (May 22) that the investigation remains ongoing.

A notice from Ofsted stated the nursey was suspended between May 31, 2022, and July 12.

It explained that the purpose of the suspension was to allow time to investigate the belief that a child may be exposed to a risk of harm.

The nursery is no longer operating, according to the Metropolitan Police. 

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said on August 1, 2022: “We can confirm that police are investigating allegations of child cruelty in relation to a nursery school in Bromley. 

“It is alleged that on Friday, 20 May a two-year-old child was physically assaulted by staff members at the venue. 

“There were no apparent physical injuries to the child. 

“Four female members of staff, aged 18-28, were arrested on suspicion of child cruelty and were subsequently released on bail. 

“Two further female members of staff were interviewed voluntarily. 

“Enquiries are ongoing. 

“Detectives from the Met’s Child Abuse Investigation Team [CAIT] are investigating. 

“We are aware that the nursery is no longer operating.”
