International Yoga Day 2023: History, Theme and Significance – Times of India

International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on June 21. It serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the various benefits of practicing yoga.
It is an ancient practice that originated in India and has gained popularity globally for its mental, physical, and spiritual benefits. It incorporates various postures (asanas), meditation techniques, and breathing exercises (pranayama) to promote overall well-being and harmony.
International Yoga Day History
The idea of observing International Yoga Day was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2014. The PM suggested June 21 as the date for the observance as it is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
The proposal received overwhelming support and response from the UN member states, which resulted in the adoption of a resolution on December 11, 2014, announcing June 21 as International Yoga Day. This resolution was co-sponsored by a record 177 countries, highlighting the worldwide recognition and acceptance of yoga as a beneficial practice.
