International Women’s Day – Ileesha De Silva Newstead Wood
This remarkable day highlights the political, economic, social, and cultural achievements of women all around the world. While progress has been made in achieving gender equality, women continue to face gender-biased violence and discrimination such as the unequal access to economic opportunities and even education in countries. However, gender inequality varies around the world and some countries have made significant progress.
Gabriella Boyd quoted, “I think it needs more representation, right now it’s just a day everyone knows about but doesn’t really celebrate. Women and girls have been and still are fighting for equal rights. It’s hard being a woman, to men nothing is ever right. Although international women’s day is talked about, nothing special ever happens.”
Another person said, “Women totally deserve international women’s day! After everything they’ve been through, this day will help raise much more awareness. Women are still being cat called and abused each day, yet all people do is just stand there and watch. I think we need to take more action on international women’s day to really make a change for the young girls in the next generation.”
Overall, there has been many progresses and the attitudes towards gender equality has changed for the better. International Women’s Day may only be a day each year, but you can still appreciate all the strong woman in your life and in history every day!
