With David de Gea’s future at Old Trafford uncertain, United have stepped up their search for a new no1 in recent weeks.
Brentford shot stopper David Raya and Diogo Costa of Benfica have also been of interest but United are now hoping to sign Onana, who previously worked with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.
Reports have suggested officials from United and Inter met on Friday to discuss the move with Nerazzurri chief Marotta confirming those talks are underway.
‘Manchester United confirmed to us that they are interested in Andre Onana’ Marotta said.
‘We are waiting for an official proposal in the next days, then we will decide how to react right after.’
Inter are understood to be asking for €50million (£42m) for their goalkeeper.
De Gea will become a free agent when his contract expires at midnight tonight. United have been in discussions with the Spaniard over a new contract on vastly reduced terms since the start of the year.
It emerged this week de Gea agreed to that new deal on a reduced salary, only for United to back out of the proposal.
United then submitted a new offer with an even lower salary which has not been signed.
The former Atletico Madrid starlet is getting married this weekend to long-term partner Edurne Garcia with talks set to continue next week.
Meanwhile, reports in Netherlands claim United are also interested in signing Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow to come in and compete for the no1 spot with Onana should de Gea leave the club this summer.
Feyenoord are desperate to hold onto their shot stopper and will offer him a new contract to try and fend off interest from United.
