Instagram brings its parental supervision tools to India

Instagram on Thursday said it has rolled out its new Parental Supervision tools in India which will allow parents to control how their children use the platform and help monitor their usage while also notifying them in case of any trouble. The social media platform is also introducing a Family Center where parents and guardians can access supervision tools and resources from experts.

This move comes after
Meta launched parental supervision controls and a family center in the US in March this year. The new supervision tools on Instagram will allow parents to supervise elements like how much time their kid spends on the platform. The tools will also enable them to set limits, as well as schedule breaks throughout the day. Parents will also now be notified when a kid blocks or reports an account on the platform.

“Our intention is to strike the right balance for young people’s desire for some autonomy when using Instagram, but also allows for supervision in a way that supports conversations between parents and young people when it is helpful. We’re thankful to all our expert partners in this space, who’s insights we continuously draw from, including for our launches today,” Natasha Jog, head, public policy, Instagram, Facebook India (Meta), said in a statement.

The company said its parent organisation Meta has been working closely with experts, parents, guardians and young people from India to understand the needs of parents and young people. One of the biggest needs is to provide tools and resources to educate parents about digital services and for this, the company will also be working with Kidsstoppress.com to engage with parents and spread awareness of the tools.

Instagram also announced Family Center, an education hub where parents and guardians can access resources from experts via helpful articles, videos and tips. These will cover topics like how to talk to young people about social media. Among the resources will also be video tutorials on using the new Supervision Tools on the platform.
