Insidious: The Red Door Takes Down Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at the Domestic Weekend Box Office
Insidious: The Red Door has stopped Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny from securing a second domestic weekend box office win as it earned $32.6 million to Indy’s $26.5 million.
As reported by Comscore, Insidious: The Red Door, which is a sequel to 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2 and the fifth film in the franchise, also won the global weekend box office with $64.05 million by adding $31.4 million from overseas.
Furthermore, Insidious had the best opening for a horror movie in 2019, which saw It: Chapter 2 open to $91.06 million.
In our Insidious: The Red Door review, we said it “is a satisfying conclusion to the Lambert family’s long nightmare journey into The Further, even if it starts to rely too heavily on jump scares by the end.”
Indy wasn’t too far behind, and it actually won the international weekend box office by bringing in $31.8 million to Insidious’ $31.4 million. Globally, the fifth Indiana Jones film has earned $247.9 million, with $121.2 million coming from North America (a 56% drop from its opening weekend) and $126.7 million made internationally.
Sound of Freedom, which is based on a true story about a brother and sister who were captured by child traffickers, opened in third place with ticket sales of $18.2 million. Rounding out the top five were Elemental with $9.6 million and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse with $8 million.
For those keeping track, The Flash was pushed out of the top 10 and placed 12th with $2.2 million in its fourth weekend in theaters.
