Inside Martin Roberts’ life, from rock band past to life-saving heart operation

Presenter and property expert Martin Roberts will be joining chef James Martin in the kitchen for his Saturday Morning show this week.

The quirky TV presenter is best known for co-hosting BBC auction show Homes Under the Hammer and recently returned to I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! after originally starring back in 2016.

After growing up in Warrington, Cheshire, he spent the early 1990s working as a property developer, leading him to star in related programmes like How to Survive the Property Crisis.

He has remained with Homes Under the Hammer though, having been on hand to give his expertise since it first launched in 2003.

But properties weren’t his only passion when Roberts was younger as he was also a lover of rock ‘n’ roll.

Back in 2019, he shared a throwback picture showing him rocking out in a band back in the 1970s.

The picture shows him and other students in 1978 leaping around a stage as the group, known as Super Nova!, performed to a live audience.

He captioned the picture: “Back in December 1978…a young lad in a school rock band…

“There’s a reunion over 40 years on and they’ve asked me to play bass again for the final number.”

Fans of the presenter were left worried for his welfare last year when it came out he had just “hours” to life after doctors didn’t spot a problem with his heart.

He was experiencing pain in his heart which turned out to be his pericardium, a fluid-filled sack that protects the organ, had expanded, putting pressure on his heart.

Roberts had to have life-saving surgery as a result as the condition grew so dangerous that he had just a few hours to live.

He added to The Mirror if he wasn’t in the “right place”, he would have “been dead”.

Regarding his personal life, Roberts tends to keep quiet but previously shared how he met his wife of 13 years, Kirsty.

He was reporting on an NSPCC charity climb on Mount Kilimanjaro for ITV’s Wish You Were Here…? when their paths crossed.

“I’d never met my wife Kirsty before, but she was on the climb too raising money,” the dad-of-two recalled.

“Her granny had made her a fruit cake to take and she kept one piece for the summit.

“At the top I collapsed with altitude sickness, and out of the mist came Kirsty bearing this final piece of cake for me.

“I have to admit – it was love at first bite!”
