Impressive Chalmers flexes as Simpson falters
Cody Simpson’s path to Paris hit another hurdle after the singer turned swimmer failed to qualify for the final of the men’s 100m freestyle at the Australian National Championships.
Simpson finished fifth in the B final in a a time of 50.25 seconds, which was the 17th quickest time overall as as Kyle Chalmers won the men’s 100m freestyle final.
It comes after Simpson finished eighth in the 100m butterfly.

The Australian National Championships aren’t at the top of the priority list for a number of swimmers, with some more focused on the World Championship trials in June.
Simpson last year finished the 100m freestyle eighth overall at the selection trials for the Commonwealth Games.
He then won a gold and a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games for swimming in the heats of the 4x100m men’s freestyle relay and 4x100m medley relay.
Chalmers took out the national championship by just 0.41 seconds, with teenager Kai Taylor in hot pursuit and Flynn Southam in third (48.53s).
“That was good,” Chalmers said. “I never expect too much at this time of year. It’s all about the race more so than the time. [The heat time] this morning was probably a shock.
“I’m in a massive heavy [training] block at the moment. Racing is the best training. This year having trials and the worlds will be a whole lot quieter.”
