‘Important’ skincare ingredients will ‘prevent premature ageing’, claims expert

Speaking to Express.co.uk, aesthetics specialist and advisor to Hada Labo Tokyo skincare, Dr Noman Mohamed, said: “As we make our way through life our skin care needs and requirements change, and this is because our skin is also changing.

“Collagen levels particularly for women start to fall due to reducing oestrogen levels, with many saying in a recent Hada Labo Tokyo real-world research poll that they had noticed fine lines, wrinkles and drier and duller skin as they age.”

As the body’s largest organ, the skin deserves plenty of tender loving care, even when there are no visible signs of ageing.

That’s why Dr Noman recommended establishing an effective routine as young as possible.

He claimed that people in their 20s should aim for “consistency” rather than strong remedies.

The skin expert said: “If we look at skin needs and skin care in terms of decades, in the twenties a consistent skincare routine is important to prevent premature ageing.

“In your twenties, you don’t need to buy every product going, but there are a few types of products which will do you the world of good and here skin hydration is key.”

When it comes to building a repertoire of effective products, Dr Noman suggested a trio of hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrator, moisturisers, and a cleanser.

He explained: “You want products packed with different sizes of HA that penetrate the skin deeply like those in the Hada Labo Skincare range.”

Women in their thirties should continue to focus on hydration but also incorporate stronger anti-ageing ingredients.

The skincare expert said: “Collagen and elastin production begins to slow down from your twenties and these effects become more apparent in your thirties. Both are needed to help maintain strong and supple skin.

“Your mid-twenties to thirties is the time to introduce anti-ageing ingredients like retinol and an HA lotion is an essential inclusion, to support collagen production and strengthen the epidermal barrier.

“You want an HA lotion packed with four or more HAs as a single HA will just sit on the top surface of the skin and not penetrate deeply.”

According to Dr Noman, starting retinol at this age is also beneficial to help the skin “acclimatise” to it.

Regarded as a “powerhouse ingredient”, retinol is an ideal topical treatment to prevent early signs of ageing.

Using it later in life can also reverse fine lines, wrinkles and age spots when they do appear.
