A Chipotle customer who once worked at the Tex-Mex fast-food chain grew so frustrated by the delay in placing her order she decided to take matters into her own hands by hopping over the counter and manning the cash register herself.
A TikTok user who goes by the name “Nikki” posted a video showing a colleague in a uniform from a car wash company behind the counter of a Chipotle in Florida.
“When you dare your coworker to go try to cash people out at Chipotle because it is busy and you want food,” Nikki wrote in the caption.
“In full uniform from OUR job,” the caption continued.
“Nobody said nothing.”
Nikki wrote that her colleague took the orders of two other impatient customers who were forced to wait in the understaffed restaurant.
“Everyone was just looking confused but went with it,” Nikki wrote.
“She just took a couple people [and] walked away.”
Nikki wrote that she and her colleague “left shortly after that,” observing that “people are so oblivious and just don’t pay attention.”
As of Thursday, the video amassed more than 225,000 views.
Nikki’s co-worker, who was wearing her work uniform, appeared at ease taking orders from the other customers.
The sight of an employee of another company manning the cash register at a Chipotle ignited visceral reaction on TikTok.
One TikTok user speculated that “the manager on duty probably got fired because of this.”
A TikTok user who goes by the name Jerrey Bacon wrote: “I worked at Chipotle for five years and I’m totally not surprised at this especially right now with how understaffed they are.”
One TikTok user wondered how Nikki could have accessed the cash register since employees need to use their badge to swipe in and log on.
Nikki said that “they left their card at the register” and that her colleague “worked at a Chipotle a while ago so she knows the system.”
“But people just didn’t care,” Nikki wrote.
The Post has reached out to Chipotle seeking comment.
Chipotle and other leisure and hospitality companies have been struggling to fill their slots as employee turnover has reached record highs during the COVID era.
Earlier this year, the company said it “experienced higher than normal turnover in 2021.”
To address the labor shortage, Chipotle raised its average hourly minimum wage to $15 in May. It also added referral bonuses while offering employees more pathways for career advancement.
