I’m sick of school-run parents blocking my road… the council need to BAN them
FED-UP residents said they are sick of parents blocking their road when they drop their children at school and called for the council to BAN them.
Mum-of-three- Mariama Diallo, 35, says double parking outside the Hotspur Primary School in Heaton, Newcastle is even putting the kids’ lives at risk.
Parking on Mowbray Street is only allowed on one side of the road which means the street often gets busy with parents who pick up or drop off their children at school, leaving residents frustrated.
The mum-of-three, who is heavily pregnant with her fourth child and
struggles to get up and down the stairs said she is worried about her children’s safety.
Mariama said she is too scared to allow her two children Kadiatou, 8 and Aissatou, 7 go to school unaccompanied despite living right across it.
She said: “In my condition, I want to watch my girls walk to the gate, and check they are safe from the door.
“But the situation with the cars makes it too dangerous. I am too worried to allow it.
“There are so many vehicles here at school time.
“I am scared they will hit the children.
“I would love cars to be banned at drop off and pick up.
“It will be annoying for some of the parents. But children’s safety has to come first and is more important.”
Another resident, Francis Hamilton, 71, a retired programme analyst who lives on the street described it as a “horrible situation.”
The 71-year-old who drops off his grandson at the nursery three times a week says sometimes he can’t find a parking space at all.
He said: “I have seen people double and triple park on this street.
“Parents park wherever they want to. They are double-parked from the bottom all the way up.
“Between 8.30 am and 9.15 am to 9.30 am I can’t get parked and I can’t get out.
It’s terrible. It is a really poor situation here. The school is the main issue.

“I sometimes find myself blocked in. I will be sat there for the five or ten
minutes waiting. It’s frustrating.”
“When the delivery drivers come in their white vans the situation is even worse, ” he added.
“I worry about the safety of children.
“The council banning parents from parking here is a good idea, but I don’t think it would work.
“I feel it could exacerbate the issue in one way as the problem would then be pushed to other streets.”
‘POOR SITUATION’
Linda Cherry is a 54-year-old social carer who lives on the street.
She said the way it could work best for everyone would be if the council would introduce parking permits and install cameras that would take the cars’ registration numbers.
She said: “It’s terrible. It is a really poor situation here. The school is the main issue.
“It’s not just the parents, it’s the teachers as well.
“You also have people who park on the street and walk into town.
“As a resident you can’t get parked at all.
“You can find yourself driving around for 20minutes looking for a space.
“Even the back lanes behind the street get clogged up with cars.
“And when people double park you find yourself blocked in.
“The parents open their doors to let their kids out and they knock your car.
“You worry kids will have an accident.
“It’s not just the children, it’s also the animals. I have a couple of cats and
I worry about them getting out and being hurt.”
