I’m outraged after council painted yellow lines outside my shop by MISTAKE
SHOPKEEPERS are livid after a bungling council painted double yellows outside their shops by mistake – threatening to throw their businesses into ruin.
Council contractors were meant to be reinstalling parking bays which had been there before the £1.7 million roadworks project began.
But business owners in Bristol watched in horror after a marathon nine-months of disruptive works delivered what business owner Dave John branded “the final nail in the coffin”.
The 64-year-old, who has run his namesake butchers for 20 years, told BristolLive: “They have completely messed this up.
“It is incompetence.”
Three parking bays previously served shops on St Peters Rise, near the Headley Park area of the city – offering a ready supply of customers to businesses.
But ever since roadworks began last December shopkeepers at the Bishopsworth end of the street have been “absolutely shafted”.
Customers have been unable to pull up outside the shops, sending businesses into a death spiral.
And Dave added how the mishap stings that bit more following the financial ruin Covid brought.
He explained this is because many shopkeepers got “no money” from the Government over the pandemic to see them through – despite asking for help.
Local Councillor Richard Eddy accused the council of making a “stupid mistake”.
He added: “Clearly, bureaucracy has gone mad here.”
Bristol City Council have since apologised for the error and accepted responsibility.
A city council spokesperson added that the lines were painted by contractors ETM and that it had sent them back to fix it on Wednesday.
But works to remove the double yellows did not take place until Thursday morning.
The Sun Online have approached Bristol City Council for comment.
