AN expert mechanic has revealed why motorists should never overfill their car with petrol.
Scotty Kilmer, who has 55 years of experience, explained the reasoning behind the tip, which could help drivers avoid a costly repair.

Scotty said: “I’m gonna tell you why you should never fill your tank all the way up to the top when you’re at the pump.
“And it isn’t just because you don’t want to make a mess and get gasoline all over the place.”
The short clip then cuts to a view of the opening of a car’s petrol tank.
Scotty explained that there are two holes on the inside of the petrol cap.
He said: “If you overfill your tank, you put petrol in the Evap – Evaporative Emission Control System – canister.
It is used to prevent petrol vapours from escaping into the atmosphere from the fuel tank and fuel system.
The expert warned that it can cost hundreds of pounds to replace.
Scotty advised that when your filling up and the pump clicks off, stop filling your tank.
The footage was uploaded to the TikTok page “@scottykilmerofficial” which has 761,000 followers.
It’s been a huge attraction on the social media site, having been seen 515,000 times and gained some 33,000 likes and more than 600 comments.
One commentator wrote: “People fill it up AFTER it stops? I didn’t even think that was possible.”
Another admitted they were guilty of overfilling, saying: “I’m terrible at this, okay I’ll stop that!”
A third added: “I always try to tell people this but most don’t listen.”
