I’m an expert mechanic – easy mistake every driver makes could cost thousands
A VETERAN mechanic has shared how drivers can avoid the common mistake that could cost them thousands.
Scott Kilmer, 69, whose YouTube videos have hit almost two billion views, shared the advice in a short TikTok clip.
He said drivers should never do what he called double gasketing when changing their engine oil.
“Realise the gasket on your oil filter is just sitting there,” he began.
“Sometimes when you take it off the engine, the gasket will stick on the engine.
“When you put the new filter on, it has its own gasket – you’ll have a gasket on a gasket, it’ll squish it and as soon as it gets pressure it can leak all the oil out of your engine.”

Double gasketing takes place if a new filter is installed on top of an old seal and oil security is compromised.
What can result is the oil completely blowing out as soon as the engine starts.
Kilmer went on to explain how drivers are better off navigating changing their oil.
“Before you put the new oil filter on, get a flashlight,” he said.
“Get a flashlight pointed at your engine where it screws on, make sure there isn’t a gasket stuck on there.
“And if you pull your old oil filter off and it looks like this with no gasket, you know the gas gets stuck somewhere.”
A typical engine replacement can cost between £1,500 to £4,000, according to Airtasker.
Kilmer first started working as a mechanic at 14 and began making videos in the 2000s before clocking up almost six-million followers.
His efforts come after another motor expert revealed how a 20p piece can keep drivers safe while behind the wheel in wet weather.
